What is Pedialyte? Is it good for hydration? For hangovers? For athletes?

What is Pedialyte? What is Pedialyte good for?

Pedialyte can be consumed as a drink, popsicle, or jell cup that’s purpose is to replace the fluids you lost in your body due to vomiting or diarrhea. Both of these actions can cause dehydration. Loaded with electrolytes, Pedialyte is often used to replenish the electrolytes used after working out or a night of drinking alcohol.

Can Pedialyte be used for hangovers?

Technically, yes, Pedialyte can be used to aid with hangovers and is popularly used as such. However, there are a number of possible side effects that should have you looking for a better hangover remedy.

What are the side effects of Pedialyte?

Pedialyte can cause a few unwanted side effects, including:

convulsions (seizures)
fast heartbeat
high blood pressure
muscle twitching
swelling of feet or lower legs

Hangovers are already terrible enough. I’m not a doctor, but I don’t want to deal with the possibility of those side effects while I’m hungover.

What are the main ingredients of Pedialyte?
Active ingredients (mg/100 mL):
2500 mg of dextrose
205 mg of sodium chloride
204 mg of potassium citrate
6 mg of sodium citrate

Nonmedicinal ingredients (flavored version)
citric acid
artificial grape flavor
acesulfame potassium,
FD&C Red No. 40, and FD&C Blue No. 1.

Those that like their drinks with a bit of flavor will likely buy one of the flavored Pedialyte drinks, which are flavored with sucralose. Sucralose, otherwise known as Splenda, is a popular artificial sweetener. Despite being around since the 1990s, there has not been a ton of human research done on the effects of sucralose. There have been sucralose studies conducted on rats showing damage to gut bacteria. There have also been studies linking sucralose to a higher risk of cancer with the rats. You can read more about sucralose here. Sucralose doesn't sound so great, and given that it is created in a lab...why drink it if you don't have to?

Like sucralose, acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) is a calorie-free sweetener used in many diet products, including sugar-free versions of Red Bull, Rockstar, Bang, and Monster. Similar to sucralose, Ace-K has been tested against mice. The research showed that Ace-K has been linked to cancer, thyroid issues, and changes in brain function. Kill Cliff uses natural sweeteners such as erythritol, monk fruit extract, and stevia

Pedialyte also uses artificial colors in their drinks. Artificial colors have been recently linked to increased hyperactivity in children, cancer and other maladies and sensitivities. Kill Cliff drinks get their color from natural fruit and vegetable extracts instead of artificial colors

Can you drink Pedialyte while working out?

Yes, you can consume Pedialyte during a workout. If you are attempting a longer workout, a drink like Pedialyte can help you replenish the electrolytes you will lose during the exercise.

Is Pedialyte good after a workout?

Packed with 200mg+ of both sodium and potassium, these electrolytes are crucial for post-workout recovery, making Pedialyte a great option after a long workout.

Is Pedialyte good for dehydration in adults?

Yes, though Pedialyte is often used for small children, it works as a hydration solution for adults we well. There is not an age in your life where you will not need electrolytes.

Is there a better hydration alternative to Pedialyte? Is there a better hangover cure than Pedialyte?

Of course, there is a better solution than Pedialyte. Just as you should hydrate while you drink, you need to hydrate after drinking as well. Whether you are seeking to hydrate after a long night or preparing for an ultra-marathon, you should try Kill Cliff ENDURE. ENDURE has 470 mg of potassium, which is 10x more than you'd find in a Gatorade, in addition to electrolytes. Unlike Pedialyte, ENDURE uses a natural sweetener, actually tastes good and provides sustained energy without spiking your blood sugar.

According to world record holding Ultra Endurance athlete Wayne Dowd….”I used to buy cans of Recovery after CrossFit workouts. They worked well for me and were a tasty reward at the back end of a workout. I had never used Endure until I used it in a race. I drank 8 bottles of Endure throughout the entirety of my 20-hour race. I was amazed at how easy it was to drink and didn’t need other things to eat to give me the energy I needed. I didn’t feel bloated and was very energized and comfortable."

Vitamins can also be a helpful hangover hack, specifically B vitamins. B vitamins such as B1. B2, B6, and B12 can be very helpful for recovery. Lucky for you, Kill Cliff RECOVER and IGNITE are filled with B vitamins. IGNITE is Kill Cliff's naturally caffeinated energy drink that can help you get going if you need a kick of energy in the morning after a hangover (150 mg of caffeine). Plus, it tastes way better than Pedialyte anyway. RECOVER, the leading post-workout recovery drink, is also a great mixer that helps stave off a hangover while tasting great

Again, you can always drink Pedialyte, but you can also grab an ice cold Kill Cliff drink and crush life.
