The Importance of Hydration

What is hydration? What is dehydration?

Hydration is when your body has enough water for it to properly function, therefore, dehydration is simply the opposite. Dehydration occurs when you lose (or use) more fluid than you are taking in.

When you get that feeling that you need a giant glass of cold water and you can't think of anything else, chances are you are dehydrated.

In order to get your body back to normal, you need to get to replace that missing water with either more water or another form of hydration, such as electrolytes.

How do you get dehydrated? What happens to your body when you are hydrated? What are dehydration symptoms?

As previously mentioned, dehydration occurs when you are losing more water than you are taking in. This can easily happen in many different ways, including sweating, breathing, peeing, pooping, tears, and saliva. Occasionally, your body will go through different situations in which you will lose more water than usual. Those events include fevers, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, and frequent urination.

Dehydration can also happen when you wouldn't even expect it to happen. For example, you may be extremely busy and don't have a lot of time to replace your lost fluid. You may not even realize your thirsty. You might even have mouth sores that make you not want to drink anything. These small factors could easily lead you to a mild level of dehydration.

There are different levels of dehydration; mild, moderate, and severe. Your level of dehydration will depend on the amount of fluid you have lost. As expected, the symptoms of dehydration get worse as you climb the levels.

Mild or Moderation symptoms:

  • Thirst
  • Dry or sticky mouth
  • Lack of urination
  • Dark yellow pee
  • Dry, cool skin
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps

Severe symptoms:

  • Not peeing or having very dark yellow pee
  • Very dry skin
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sunken eyes
  • Sleepiness, lack of energy, confusion or irritability
  • Fainting

Generally, the people who are most at risk for hydration are; babies and young children, older adults, people with an illness, people with chronic illness, and people who are active in the sun.

How can I get hydrated quickly?

  • Drink water. Drink slowly to avoid upsetting your stomach.
  • Eating foods that are high in electrolytes and water, such as dairy, bananas, watermelon, avocados, and other fruits/veggies.
  • If you do not have access to food, drink an electrolyte-based sports drink. We recommend Kill Cliff ENDURE
  • Drink more fluid than the amount of fluid you have lost.
  • Stay away from drinking an excessive amount of alcohol or caffeine, as these can lead to more trips to the bathroom, which will lead to less fluid retained.

Which sports drinks or electrolyte drink is best for you?

Many athletes use products such as Gatorade and Powerade to help them in their training in order to replenish their electrolytes. While those drinks are packed with electrolytes, they are also packed with simple sugars that will give you an initial boost of energy, but that sudden burst will quickly fade. So, not only are these drinks filled with an unhealthy amount of sugar, but they also are spiking your glycemic index and making you crash. Don't you want a great tasting beverage that will provide you with the electrolytes you need to prevent dehydration without pumping you full of unhealthy sugars? Don't worry, Kill Cliff is on top of it with our three drink system of IGNITE, ENDURE, and RECOVER, helping you hydrate before, during, and after a workout.

How long does it take to get hydrated after being dehydrated?

Well, it truly depends on how much fluid you have lost. Studies have shown that it takes about 45 minutes and 600 mL of water for someone who is mildly dehydrated to become fully hydrated. Naturally, the more dehydrated you are, the longer it will take you to get back to full hydration. Make sure you check the dehydration symptoms above to see what level of dehydration you are in.
