The world runs on caffeine. And that’s not a bad thing, is it?
In fact, caffeine—our favorite entirely legal drug—has quite literally changed history. Many believe caffeine contributed to the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution by keeping people awake longer and thus more productive.
Some studies show that caffeine is also linked to improved athletic performance and brain function.
However, when it comes to caffeine, various drinks churn out different levels of energy. What wakes you up more, coffee or energy drinks? A better question, What is safer for you?
Let’s dig into the numbers.
Coffee
First up, coffee. Coffee’s caffeine count is different based on different drinks. For instance:
- 8oz brewed cup of joe—96mg of caffeine
- 1oz of espresso—64mg
- 12oz cup of cold brew—153mg to 238mg
- 8oz cup of instant coffee (is that still a thing?)—62mg
Caffeine in coffee is affected by several factors, including the type of coffee bean, roasting style, and serving size.
Energy drinks
Like coffee, energy drinks contain different amounts of caffeine depending on brand and size. Many brands come in bigass 24oz cans and contain the following amount of caffeine:
- Full Throttle—210mg
- 5-Hour Energy—215mg in 2oz bottles
- Monster—221m
- Rockstar—229mg
- Redbull—111mg in 12oz cans
Where’s that caffeine from?
All of the caffeine in these drinks is added. Since the makers don’t list the source of the caffeine on the label—such as “green tea extract”—you can assume it is synthetic caffeine. (We’ve been over this.)
Studies show that energy drinks with high amounts of synthetic caffeine are associated with potentially harmful changes in blood pressure and heart function that are beyond those seen with caffeine alone. This is due to added ingredients like sugar, B vitamins, and “energy blends” that include taurine (we know about taurine; stuff’s dangerous on its own), guarana, and other stimulants and additives. Not to mention fake sugar. (We’ve warned you about that, too.)
Mix them all together and roll the dice on your health.
Where does Kill Cliff fall in this?
Unlike other energy drinks, Kill Cliff doesn’t contain sugar. In fact, each 12oz can only has 15 calories from all the ingredients, which, like the caffeine and sweeteners, are clean and all-natural.
Kill Cliff Ignite offers 150mg of caffeine from green tea, a naturally sourced caffeine filled with antioxidants. This type of caffeine is absorbed slowly in your body, which provides a gentler, more consistent lift than from the harsh spike and crash from synthetic caffeine. There are seven Ignite flavors.
Kill Cliff Energize x Recover is fortified with 25mg of clean caffeine. Check out each of the five flavors.
Each all-natural Kill Cliff flavor includes a blend of B-vitamins and electrolytes to keep you hydrated and charged.
