If the devil had a favorite food, it would be sugar.
The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of sugars per day, more than three times the World Health Organization’s recommended standard of 25 grams. (FYI, there are 4.2 grams of sugar in a teaspoon.)
If you find yourself moving toward the snack drawer in the late afternoon, you’re not alone. Sugar is addictive and some even call it toxic. Research using rats found that sugar is more addictive than cocaine.
Sugar can contribute to health problems, such as, obviously, weight gain and obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. One of the easiest ways for Americans to lead healthier lives is to cut out added sugars, like table sugar, syrups, honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices.
But it’s not that easy.
You’d be surprised at how many foods contain hidden sugars, especially those labeled “light” or “low fat.” Low fat yogurt can contain more than 45 grams of sugar, one tablespoon of ketchup contains nearly 1 teaspoon, sports drinks can contain 32 grams, protein bars contain around 20 grams, the list goes on…
IS THERE ANY GOOD NEWS?
Yes! A low-sugar and anti-sugar movement has moved to the fore, and nothing is off limits, including the billion-dollar cannabis industry.
While cannabis manufacturers have been slow to provide low-sugar options, they are waking up and catching up. Cannabis and its denuded cousin CBD has shifted to a wellness category. Edibles makers are avoiding synthetic additives and instead include concentrates and powders of naturally sweet fruits and vegetables.
For instance, monk fruit, a zero-calorie sweetener is becoming a go-to natural solution since it’s 100 times sweeter than table sugar.
Others are using date paste as a natural sweetener while still delivering a good taste.
Companies are learning to overcome the taste of cannabinoid extracts with sugar alternatives that can still crystallize to form a hard candy texture.
Quality doesn’t come without added cost, though. Expect to spend almost twice as much for nonsugar sweeteners. As with most grocery store items, if the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
