Friday night may be the most important night in Dilano Taylor’s 25-year-old life. It certainly may be his biggest payday.
Kill Cliff FC fighter Taylor, aka the Postman, will battle it out with Sadibou Sy in the World Championship welterweight final Friday at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The prize? One MILLION dollars. That’s $1,000,000. You can see it on ESPN+ PPV. It’s the inaugural PPV PFL fight, by the way. The price is $49.99.
Taylor, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) Challenger Series winner, happens to be the alternate, replacing Russian Magomed Magomedkerimov who eliminated Taylor with a second round KO from the competition in July. Magomedkerimov is now in the night’s prelims vs. Gleison Tibau. Long story.
Sadibou Sy, aka the Swedish Denzel (as in Washington), is a 35-year-old kickboxer and four-time Muay Thai world champ. His record is a cool 12-6-2 to Taylor’s 10-2-0.
Note: We have a U.S.-born Jamaican taking on a Sweden-born Senegalese for $1 million. Is this a cosmopolitan sport or what?
"Being born here (USA) and raised with a Jamaican culture puts a lot in my mind that you can do a lot with a little. You can do anything you want as long as you have enough and this is more than enough," Taylor said at a press conference.
“Bringing home the belt, the world championship title for PFL, to Sweden would be one of the biggest accomplishments of Swedish mixed martial arts and I’m looking forward to that,” Sy said. “I’m also looking forward to taking the belt to Senegal. And I can just see my people be so proud that we have a world champion.”
You can see both fighters are not focused on the money. They are fighting for national price, which should make for a more emotional finale. We’ll be watching.
