The Book of Aung: Meet the Kill Cliff FIGHT CLUB Fighter
The 36-year-old Burmese-American mixed martial artist made a name for himself after signing with ONE Championship and winning two titles. Born in Myanmar, Aung has become a superstar for the country. We’ve collected a few things you might not know about the proud Kill Cliff FIGHT CLUBBER. Starting with…
Where Is Aung La Nsang From?
Aung was born in Myitkyina, Kachin State, Myanmar. His father was a jewelry trader and he grew up the third son of five siblings. Aung was known as one of the best athletes in high school before he moved to the United States in 2004 at the age of 18. Once in the U.S., he studied Agricultural Science at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other disciplines.
Did Aung La Nsang Ever Work with…Bees?
Indeed! After graduating from college, Aung lived in a small trailer park in Felda, Florida, and joined a honey and pollination business. He worked as a migratory beekeeper, traveling across the U.S. to pollinate almonds in California, cranberries in Wisconsin, blueberries in Michigan, and oranges in Florida. In his spare time, he kept up his MMA training.
What About His Nickname, "the Burmese Python"?
You know how a python works, right? It wraps around you and…slowly…drains…the lifeforce…from…your…body. So does Nsang, if he doesn't knock you out first. In 2005, Aung made his professional fighting debut and since then, in subsequent bouts, became known for his outstanding submission skills. Here are three really cool submissions.
Has Aung La Nsang Ever Gone Viral?
You bet! And it’s a goodie. When he was just 27-years-old, Aung became a social media sensation after footage of him knocking out Jason Louck at CFFC 17 went viral. Here are five of his top knockouts.
What League Does Aung La Nsang Fight In?
All of them! From 2005 to 2020, Aung competed in Total Fight Challenge, Ultimate Throwdown, Heartland Ground n Pound, United Fight League, Corral’s Combat Classic, Ring of Combat, Matrix Fights, Bellator Fighting Championship, Cage Fury Fighting Championships.
Aung made his ONE Championship debut in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2014. He went on a hiatus in 2015 and returned in 2016 with a submission win against Mohamed Ali of Egypt, his first professional MMA fight in his home country.
…The Fight That Changed His Life Was…
Down to 10 to 1 odds, Aung took down the reigning ONE Middleweight World Champion, Vitaly Bigdash of Russia, making him Myanmar’s first ever world champion a mainstream sport. He instantly became a national hero and is still one of Myanmar’s most famous athletes.
Aung La Nsang Is a Hero at Home, Right?
Oh yeah. A year after taking down Bigdash, Aung was honored with $7,700 from Myanmar’s commander-in-chief, Min Aung Hlaing. Officials from the Burmese army, navy, and air force also attended.
Activism and…What the Heck Is a Momo?
Aung has worked to raise awareness for the political strife in Myanmar. He has also been appointed an ambassador of fighting wildlife crime after being a supporter of Voices for Momos, a campaign against illegal wildlife trade. A momo, by the way, is an elephant.
